2 Nature-Centric Disc Golf Courses in the Smoky Mountains

The outdoor activities to be enjoyed in the Smokies never seem to disappoint! If you’re looking for a slow-paced activity that involves the great outdoors, a little hiking, wildlife observing, obstacles, and tons of fresh air- you should consider a day of disc golf in the Smokies! Disc golf is a combined sport of two classic sports: frisbee and golf. Typically, disc golf courses will offer nine or eighteen holes, just like golf offers a front nine and a back nine. The object of the game is the same as golf when it comes to trying to make each “hole” with the fewest strokes, or in this case, throws, and your “hole” is a chain-linked basket. The discs are weighted differently and are even named after the traditional names of golf clubs. Just as any other golf course, disc golf courses are beautifully landscaped including a diverse selection of natural surroundings, wildlife, obstacles, trees, and shrubs for added difficulty. The terrain will change much like a traditional golf course with several elevation changes around the fairways. Take a look at these 2 nature-centric disc golf courses in the Smoky Mountains:

Why Is Disc Golf So Popular?

Disc golf provides an alternative way to enjoy some active play and enjoy the outdoors. You get to work your entire body, trek some beautiful scenery, and you get to use your mind as this is an obstacle-centric game. You can look forward to long walks throughout a nature-centered course as you explore between tee-pads to capture baskets and take a few scenic breaks.

Where To Play Disc Golf in and Around the Smokies

Gatlinburg’s only disc golf course is located at Mills Park. There are 3 wooded holes and 6 open holes. You’ll find a great view of the Smoky Mountains with plenty of distance to take your time walking and enjoying the outdoors- There’s even a downhill ace run on #9! This course is spread throughout the entirety of Mills Park; each hole has an informational kiosk explaining the terrain surrounding you as well as the particularities and the par for the hole being played. If you’re up for a drive, you can travel over to Cherokee, NC you should consider checking out the Fire Mountain Disc Golf Sanctuary. Fire Mountain Disc Golf Sanctuary is an 18-hole disc golf course that’s challenging, remote, and tightly wooded- It’s also free to play! Water is present on several holes as the course borders the majestic Raven Fork River.

Directions: From the intersection of US 441 and US 321 (at Red Light #3), go north on 321 for 4.6 miles to a left on Mills Park Rd. Go 0.6 miles to a left into the park parking lot. Course map by tee #1.

Where To Buy Quality Disc Golf Gear

Two main places come to mind for disc golf merchandise, REI, and NOC Gatlinburg. REI in Pigeon Forge is located in the Mountain Mile on Teaster Lane and even has a section called “Yard Sale” where you might find some used disc goods in gently used condition for a fraction of the price. The Nantahala Outdoor Center, (NOC Gatlinburg), is located at the gateway to the Smoky Mountains at the end of the Gatlinburg Strip. You can find discs of different colors and weights, as well as disc backpacks for easy toting throughout the course.
