1. Cable Mill
The Cable Mill is probably one of the most rewarding stops you’ll come across on your journey. This is the only working grist mill in the Smoky Mountains. Along this property, you will also find other historic buildings that you can explore such as a smokehouse, blacksmith shop, and a barn.
2. Dan Lawson Place
Here you will find a remarkable brick chimney, which was very uncommon for this era. Each brick was created right here in Cades Cove. This home features noticeable areas where the Lawson family made additions to the original home. You can notice these additions by looking for different patterns in the wood.
3. Tipton Place
Though owned by Colonel Hamp Tipton, only his daughters Lizzie and Lucy lived here and they practiced as teachers at the local school. You’ll also find a replica of what the original cantilever barn once looked like- built in the exact spot of the original. Cantilevers were used to store livestock and goods meant to be kept dry.
4. Carter Shields Cabin
Home of George Washington Carter Shields, a Civil War Veteran. He was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh and only inhabited this cabin for 11 years.
