Plan a Picnic
When it comes to picnicking, the Smoky Mountains are effortlessly laced with endless opportunities and backdrops to sip, nibble, rest, and share quality time. Though our roads frequently wind and bend, each curve is worth it. Every few miles you’ll stumble across an inviting picnic table waiting for company. A random off-road picnic table may even open up an opportunity for you to explore a little or seat you beside a surprise hidden waterfall (trust us there’s a lot!). Fill your picnic basket with homemade goods, or stop by a local deli (we suggest Parton’s Deli, Old Dad’s, or The Cheese Cupboard Hofbrauhaus in Gatlinburg) for the best sandwiches in town. The easiest way to find the perfect picnic spot for you is to decide if you want to be by water, up high looking out at a view of the town, or somewhere quiet along a meadow with roaming woodland creatures. Your options are limitless! Don’t forget to pack your cooler and a blanket.
*Please be kind and dispose of all trash to protect our park and the wildlife, and leave no trace for the next visitor. Together we can keep our mountains beautiful!
Seek Out a Waterfall
Waterfall hiking is a wonderful way to get up close and personal with nature. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a temperate rainforest and has substantial rainfall during the spring. The reward for ample rainfall is flowing all around us- Waterfalls! Our waterfalls range in all sizes from big and tall to small and mighty. They do not only differ from height and width but also in shape and even depth. You’ll experience beautiful swallow-tail pours, gushing forces that appear angry, and others that are quiet, misty, and trickly. Most of the waterfalls in the park require a dedicated hike to get to. After heavy rainfall, we suggest that you take a drive through Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail has a waterfall that is unseen unless there is a hearty rain, it is known as the “Place of a Thousand Drips”.
Auto-Tour And Explore Historic Sites In Cades Cove
Cades Cove is a one-stop shop for all things Smoky Mountains. If you are limited on time and the weather is PERFECT, go here. This is a verdant valley that teems with active wildlife. The landscapes will take your breath away all their own. Then there are the preserved historic structures to awe at. These structures that are still standing date back to the beginning of our town’s history. You’ll see churches and cabins, daffodils, cemeteries, hidden ponds, waterfalls, and flowing creeks. There are also plenty of picnic and hiking opportunities here. Oh! You can even see a working grist mill!
Ride Horseback
Horseback riding is a relaxing way to enjoy the outdoors. There are plenty of horseback riding stables throughout Pigeon Forge, Wears Valley, Townsend, Sugarlands, and Gatlinburg to choose from. Start with deciding where you would like to observe the Smokies the most while on horseback. We recommend Waldens Creek Riding Stables and the riding stables at Cades Cove.
