5 Prominent Fishing Holes in the Smoky Mountains

One of the time-honored ways to pass the many hours of the day here in the Smokies is none other than casting a line. Fishing has been a generational activity that has been passed down as a time-honored tradition to not only provide for one’s family, but for one’s neighbor, and teach patience and respect for nature. This time-honored tradition is now something that visitors both near and far can come to enjoy, share, and even pass down. Visit the Smoky Mountains to continue your traditions from childhood or to start new traditions and build memories with your family. Be closer than ever to the acoustic harmonies and enjoyable activities of the rivers and streams by cooking a cabin in Gatlinburg with Heartland Rentals. The multitude of rivers and streams that flow throughout Great Smoky Mountains National Park are somewhat of their own symphony orchestra. The sounds of the quietly perfected pour of water as it turns over moss-covered rocks almost even isn’t a sound at all, but more like a feeling you hold in your heart- steadfast and true. Whitewater, on the other hand, is like the baseline of a song with its forceful, calculated churn. Then there’s the gentle trickle and plop that mimics the woodwinds to keep you uplifted and spry.

Being that the river is the lifeblood of the Smoky Mountains, and has been rightfully so for the civilizations before us for hundreds of years, we should honor it for all that it honors us with. Give back to water that gives so much to us. In honor of our heritage and our waterways, Great Smoky Mountains National Park strictly practices catch and release.

Come drop a line with us this spring and summer, we’ve got a vibrant rainbow trout with your name on it!

1. LeConte Creek

On the upward side of Cherokee Orchard Road is LeConte Creek. LeConte Creek is a known fishing area that is open to all ages. Here you can feel secluded without having to travel too far out of town. Cherokee Orchard Road is a short drive from any of our Gatlinburg cabins. Fish caught and released here are rainbow trout and brook trout.

2. Mynatt Park

Mynatt Park is a fishing hole dedicated to children only. The bank offers plenty of perches for the perfect fishing spot. The area does have a lot of trees and shade, however, we suggest avoiding trying to cast too high in order to avoid the loss of lines. Your little fisherman can even drop a line and fish right off of the bridge if they like! There is plenty of parking as well as a picnic area and restrooms nearby. Mynatt Park is a wonderful location for the whole family and is an ideal place for distracted little ones.

3. Abrams Creek

Deep within Cades Cove is a noble waterway called Abrams Creek. Cades Cove is easily accessible from any of our cabin rentals, though our Wears Valley Cabins are in the closest proximity. The drive through the valley, Townsend, and Cades Cove are rewarding all on their own, though, the real treat is the fishing expedition you are about to embark on at Abrams Creek! Abrams Creek houses smallmouth bass and large trout. Fun Fact: you will see your fair share of salamanders here as Abrams Falls is a salamander haven!

4. Middle Prong Little River

Middle Prong Little River is actually two different sections of the same place that combine to create this gem of a waterway. Middle Prong is the smaller section of the stream (locally referred to as Tremont). Middle Prong of Little River is known for active rainbow trout and is a welcoming area for both experienced and beginner fishermen. Little River is the actual name of the waterway. The river forks into a Y known as the Townsend “Y” or “Wye”. It is a bit of a secret to those visiting and is a local favorite fishing hole.

5. Tremont

Bring your flies along for some of the best fly fishing in all of Great Smoky Mountains National Park! Tremont truly is an angler’s paradise. There is a gravel section along Tremont Road which will mark the area you’re looking for. This is one of the most beloved places for fishing for sport and is a well-kept local secret.
