Directions To The Gatlinburg Trail

There are two trailheads for this trail. One is on River Road near The Peddler Steakhouse, within walking distance of downtown Gatlinburg. The second trailhead is located at the Sugarlands Visitor Center, just a couple of miles from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park entrance. You can start your hike at either trailhead, but we recommend visiting the Sugarlands Visitor Center to see interesting exhibits, learn about the national park and its history, and get trail guides and other trip information!

What To Expect On The Trail

The Gatlinburg Trail is a 3.8-mile roundtrip hike, taking around a couple of hours to complete. You can enjoy walking along the river, spotting wildlife, and seeing remnants of an old homestead, including an old chimney. There’s a bridge crossing the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River, and the rest of the gravel trail is flat with plenty of surrounding wooded landscape to admire. If you reach the visitor center, you can continue to the trailhead to Cataract Falls, adding a little over a mile to your hike. This waterfall hike is easy and great for children.
