What to Do When The Forecast Calls For Snow in the Smokies

Winters in the Smoky Mountains can be somewhat unpredictable. The snow comes and goes as quickly as it falls. Our temperatures are pretty temperate, but it can get downright cold. We typically consider winter here to be a really cold version of fall. Being in the south, we don’t always get the kinds of snow that most people are used to. However, when it snows it can nearly shut things down around town if it’s icy enough- other times it makes for the perfect play day! If you’re wondering what to do when the forecast calls for snow in the smokies during your stay at one of our Gatlinburg cabins– keep on reading!

Snow Tips:

Follow the Forecast

Follow Gatlinburg’s forecast for at least two weeks prior to your trip and look ahead to the weather prediction for the duration of your trip.

*You can find out road conditions in and around the national park here: https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

And on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/smokiesroadsnps

Keep note that if snow appears to be melting off around you, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s melting off everywhere. Shady areas tend to stay icy and daytime melting creates nighttime freezing. Practice safe travel if you plan to get out.

Properly Prepare

If you find that there may be snow in the forecast, be properly prepared by planning a trip to your nearest grocery store. Gather a few staple items to keep on hand like canned foods and drinking water. If you have a wood-burning fireplace and a charcoal grill at your cabin, consider purchasing a few bundles of wood, disposable roasting pans, and charcoal just in case the power goes out. Besides, who doesn’t love a good fire with a snowy backdrop?
