1. Go for a Hike
If you’re not one to flench at the cold, we highly recommend going on a sparkling winter hike in Great Smoky Mountains National Park! The trails are peaceful and the views are even more detailed being traced in their winter coat. We suggest checking out Alum Cave Trail, Laurel Falls, and Rainbow Falls. Each of these hiking trails is relatively easy to get to from your Gatlinburg cabin rental.
2. Drive Along the Cades Cove Loop
If there were anything to attempt during galavanting about in the winter- it should be a visit to Cades Cove. There are some roads that are closed down in Cades Cove during the winter, but the Cades Cove Loop Road is open year-round! The Cades Cove Loop Road is an 11-mile paved loop that can be done as a self-guided tour. The Loop will have numerous preserved historic structures such as homesteads, churches, cemeteries, and even a grist mill. It is far less crowded here during the winter months so you’ll have even more opportunity to get out and explore and not spend as much time sitting in a car line. The only reason the Loop would close is if the winter weather were too dangerous to leave it open. We have several cabins in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Wears Valley that are as little as 15 minutes from Townsend.
3. Stop by a Visitor Center
There are 4 visitor centers in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and 3 of them are right here in our area! The most desired visitor centers are Cades Cove and Sugarlands. Cades Cove has a visitor center with both indoor and outdoor exhibits and the Sugarlands Visitor Center has historical exhibits as well as a 20-minute film about the park.
