Hike To These 5 Majestic Waterfalls in the Smoky Mountains

Published Mar 4, 2023

No matter if you consider yourself “new” to nature or not- whether you are taking a chance on nature and are seeing something for the first time, or if you are experiencing the same feeling of the same thing for the hundredth time- a waterfall will simply never get old. Waterfalls hold the essence of God in a single spray. A waterfall has many spiritual meanings. Water, pools of water, rushing water, and flowing water are all deemed sacred places full of power and possibility. Native Americans still believe to this day that water is life. Come see for yourself firsthand when you hike to these 5 majestic waterfalls in the Smoky Mountains.

1. Grotto Falls

Grotto Falls just so happens to be the absolute MOST popular waterfall in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and YOU CAN WALK BEHIND IT! The hike is considered tame and family-friendly. Once you reach the falls you will get to stand before a 25-foot magical spray that is perfectly proportioned and fed into the pool below it.

2. Abrams Falls

Tiny but mighty, Abrams Falls measures only 20 feet tall. It has a difficult hike and the water swells into a pool beneath it to make up for what it lacks in height. It is also a salamander haven!

3. Rainbow Falls

Rainbow Falls is powerful. It is an 80-foot wonder that makes a prismatic rainbow when the sunbeams hit the water spray just right. The spray, the sun, and the time of day have to be just right to prism.

4. Laurel Falls

Laurel Falls is a fully paved trail which means it is moderately easy for seniors and families with little ones. This stroller-friendly hike has some wooded spots to pause and catch a breath. There is an upper and lower section of the falls, both offering pools.

5. Ramsey Cascades

Ramsey Cascades is the tallest Smoky Mountain waterfall, dropping about 100 feet! The base has a rock outcropping formation that collects water in a pool which makes for a great breeding ground for salamanders (just like Abrams!).
