A part of Anakeesta’s ongoing $34 million project, this coaster is the second one on the mountain to provide an elevated adrenaline rush. Introducing the Hellbender Smoky Mountain Coaster

As part of Anakeesta’s ongoing expansion, the Hellbender Smoky Mountain Coaster recently debuted. This double-rail roller coaster offers a stunning 3,350-foot journey overlooking the picturesque Smoky Mountains. With seven twists and turns plunging 240 feet in all and maximum speeds of 25 mph, it promises a riveting experience. Guests can control their speed and opt for either a fast, thrilling ride or a slower, scenic journey downhill. The coaster allows solo or tandem rides, with a maximum weight limit of 330 pounds.

The Story Behind the Name Hellbender

Originating from the area’s wildlife, the coaster’s name honors the Great Smoky Mountain National Park’s unique resident, the hellbender salamander. Also known as a devil dog, mud puppy, snot otter, or lasagna lizard, this amphibian thrives in the rapid rivers and streams of the Smokies. As populations of these aquatic creatures are dwindling, it is essential to raise awareness regarding their preservation.

Comparing Anakeesta’s Two Mountain Coasters

The addition of the Hellbender makes Anakeesta home to two distinct mountain coasters. The park’s first ride of this type, Rail Runner, is the United States’ premier single-rail mountain coaster. The Hellbender’s double-rail track and 3,350-foot trail provide a lengthier ride than the 1,600-foot Rail Runner. However, the Rail Runner offers a more thrilling ride with nearly double the elevation change of the Hellbender. Both coasters allow you to control the speed at your discretion and offer solo and tandem rides, though they serve different weight limits.

The Newly Introduced Anakeesta Coaster Pass

To ride the all-new Hellbender, consider getting the new Coaster Pass from Anakeesta. This offering provides two rides on either of the exciting coasters at a one-off price. It’s an add-on purchase in addition to the general admission ticket. Do note that each rider needs a Coaster Pass unless riding tandem and the passenger height is between 38 and 48 inches tall.
