There are stunning views of the mountains throughout every season offering gem-toned leaves in fall, crisp white marvels in winter, and the greenest greens in spring. Take the time to set out into the Smokies and take a self-guided auto-tour along Newfound Gap Road before any inclement weather sets in. Directions
The directions are quite simple, and the majority of our cabins in Gatlinburg will be a short commute to Sugarlands Visitor Center. The entire tour will take approximately 90 minutes, taking you from Sugarlands Visitor Center along one main road through the mountains and ending at the Mountain Farm Museum in North Carolina.
Newfound Gap Road Auto-Tour
Sugarlands Visitor Center
We recommend starting your drive at Sugarlands Visitor Center, the most popular visitor center in the Gatlinburg area. The center is an informative, interactive experience all its own featuring a small museum and retail shop. Pick up a Newfound Gap Road tour booklet to assist you on your journey.
Campbell Overlook
Around 4 miles or so, you can pull over at Campbell Overlook to see a beautiful view of Mt. LeConte.
Chimney Tops Picnic Area
Around 6 miles in, there will be a sharp left to take that will lead you to the Chimney Tops Picnic Area. This is a great spot on a warm day!
Newfound Gap
The main attraction and reason for your drive is up next at mile marker 14.7. You will be able to get lost in the most impeccable view as well as read the commemorative plaque at the Rockefeller Memorial where President Franklin D. Roosevelt stood to dedicate Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Clingmans Dome Road
Clingmans Dome is next, the views here are insane as this is the highest elevation where you get to float above the trees and see out over 100 miles on a clear day. It rains here often and can be rather windy.
Smokemont Campground
Smokemont is next, it is a trail haven and is also the site of the Cherokee villages, a CCC camp, and farms.
Mingus Mill
Mingus Mill was built in 1886 and restored to its glory in 1937 by the CCC. It is still an actively working grist mill on the North Carolina side of Newfound Gap Road. You can buy fresh milled cornmeal and flour here.
Oconaluftee Visitor Center
The last stop before reaching the Blue Ridge Parkway is the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. You’ll find the Mountain Farm Museum here, a retail shop, gardens, animals, and a 2-mile trail that leads to Cherokee.
