If you’re fortunate enough to see snow in the forecast during your trip, we have a list of 14 ways to enjoy a snow day in the Smokies.
1. Extend Your Stay
Any excuse is a good excuse to extend your vacation in the Smokies. Take your cue from nature and take the extra day if available to you. Occasionally the road conditions aren’t the best for traveling on. We have Pigeon Forge, Wears Valley, and Gatlinburg cabins in all elevations which means just because there’s no snow downtown doesn’t mean there’s no snow on the mountain. The snow may not even be directly in our area, but surrounding areas- why chance it right? Right! If you happen to know ahead of time that snow is to be expected, consider planning a small grocery trip to have a few extra nibbles on hand just in case.
2. Cautious Winter Exploration
If you’re itching to get out and see the snow (and if it is safe to do so) you can always make your way downtown from your Gatlinburg cabin and venture over to the Sugarland Visitor Center to enjoy the Gatlinburg Trail. It’s pretty flat and is filled with flowing water, tall trees, and a few old structures. The trail is about 1.9 miles one way and you can even take your dog with you if you’re staying in one of our cabins that’s pet-friendly! Sugarland Visitor Center is close to town so you can get a mini winter hike in without having to go too far. If the roads are good, you can try venturing into the Historic Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail for other mini hikes close to town. You can even just pop by to see the Noah “Bud” Ogle homestead and head back. You can spend the day at Ober Gatlinburg ice skating, skiing, tubing, and more.
Some Bonus things to do in Gatlinburg and the surrounding Smoky Mountains during a snow day would be to:
